Dans ce livre d’Ariadne Breton-Hourcq, trois séries de photographies de paysages chinois, légèrement flous, avec des contrastes très subtils, se succèdent. La mise en page, systématique, rythme les légères variations entre les images, comme lors d’un voyage en train, il en résulte une sensation «hypnotique». Ce livre modeste, loin des standards habituels des livres de photographies, peut s’apparenter à un «carnet». Les photographies sont disposées entre une couverture «muette», sur laquelle est sérigraphiée en blanc translucide la trace du placement des images dans le livre, et un cahier central coloré comprenant les textes. La typographie, composée de très petites formes géométriques, émet une vibration, et exige la même concentration que la lecture des images. Des variations autour du vert sont présentes au fil de l’ouvrage: un vert d’eau de la couverture, un vert quasiment noir pour les gardes, un jaune éclatant par lequel la typographie bleue devient verte pour les pages centrales, et enfin un fil vert vif pour relier l’ensemble.

This book by Ariadne Breton-Hourcq shows three series of photographs of slightly out-of-focus Chinese landscapes with very subtle contrasts. The repeating layout of the pages points up the delicate variations between the images and, as when looking out of a moving train, creates a “hypnotic” feeling. This small book, very different from the usual appearance of books on photography, can be compared to a “notebook”. The photographs are contained within a “silent” cover, screen-printed onto which in transparent white is a shape resembling the arrangement of the photographs inside the book. The text appears in a coloured inner notebook. The typeface, composed of very small geometric forms, emits a vibration and demands the same concentration from the reader as do the images. Variations of green run through the book: the blueish-green of the cover, an almost black green for the flyleaves, a bright yellow that makes the blue typeface appear green for the central pages and, finally, bright green thread to stich the binding.
