Contexte: Biennale des illustrateurs de Moulins, 2019

La Biennale des illustrateurs de Moulins m’a invitée à investir, sous la forme d’une exposition dans l’espace public, une série de panneaux au format horizontal, avec la contrainte d’une fabrication sur un support adhésif. Peu habituée à travailler avec cette technique (l’adhésif découpé est souvent utilisé pour la signalétique), j’ai souhaité l’expérimenter à la manière du papier découpé, en considérant la possibilité de travailler la couleur dans la masse (à contrario de l’impression). M’appuyant sur mon statut d’outsider (devant intervenir en extérieur, et n’étant pas illustratrice), j’ai demandé à 11 illustrateurs œuvrant au trait, de dessiner une simple fleur, afin d’en faire la «mise en couleurs». Kitty Crowther, Betty Bone, Simon Roussin, Sheina Szlamka, Anouk Ricard, Magali Le Huche, Thomas Baas, Camille Jourdy, Fabrice Pellé, Aude Picault et Aurélie Guillerey ont gentiment accepté de se prêter au jeu. J’ai ensuite travaillé leur dessin en filigrane, comme le font souvent les graphistes, en composant ce bouquet, et en le colorant. La «mise en couleurs» des dessins, est parfois considérée comme une tâche subsidiaire… Ce Bouquet en prend ici le contrepied et se déploie dans une tension inédite entre trait et couleur, appuyée par les effets de matière de l’adhésif découpé.

The Biennale des Illustrateurs de Moulins invited me to create a series of panels in horizontal format to be displayed in a public space with the stipulation that these should be made of an adhesive material. Although cut-out adhesive tape is often used for signage, I was unaccustomed to working with this technique and wanted to experiment with the technique of paper cut-outs, trying out the effect of attaching coloured shapes to the various backgrounds (as opposed to printing). Relying on my status as an outsider (having to intervene on location, and not being an illustrator), I asked 11 artists specialising in line illustration to draw a simple flower so that I could add the colours. Kitty Crowther, Betty Bone, Simon Roussin, Sheina Szlamka, Anouk Ricard, Magali Le Huche, Thomas Baas, Camille Jourdy, Fabrice Pellé, Aude Picault and Aurélie Guillerey kindly agreed to assist me. I then worked on their outline drawings, as graphic designers often do, arranging this bouquet and colouring it. The colouring-in of drawings is sometimes considered a subsidiary task... This Bouquet proves that the opposite is true, unfolding with an unprecedented tension between line and colour and supported by the effects of the material used – cut-outs with adhesive backing.
